Are you on the process of planning a home decoration activity? Why not go with the trend of going green. Yes, going green or using eco-friendly and sustainable materials is the latest trend in decorating homes these days. By doing this you are not only helping in clearing the environment of unhealthy and toxic substances but also in the preservation of our planet.

To use sustainable materials means that the material to be used in your project should come from those products that can be renewed from its sources at the least amount of time. The furnishings in our homes are most appropriate targets for these sustainable materials. The market is now teeming with these eco-friendly materials which can be easier for a homeowner to find when they wish to decorate their homes. What is more is that these materials are getting to be affordable these days which makes it a favorite for consumers.

Here are some tips on how to go green in your home decoration:

• Choose materials for your furniture or other furnishings that are from sustainable resources, such as bamboo, reprocessed or recovered wood. Avoid using furniture made of new wood, either hard or soft woods. These materials can deplete the forests substantially. The bamboo, although not a wood but a grass, is a very versatile material which can be used in floorings and in furniture; it can be renewed from its source in a least amount of time because it can grow very fast and without using pesticides.

• Opt for recycled furniture if you can; these items especially those antiquated furniture are worth buying since they are more eco-friendly than their newer counterpart. Just make sure that when you find these kinds of oldies, they are still in good condition, (no mold, no bug,) and of course affordable.

• It is also worthwhile to try the oddities of some materials such as hemp, wheat and sunflower; hemp can give more volume of fabric and twine than cotton or trees with the same acre of land planted with it.

• Refined iron work, recovered metal and reprocessed plastic can be ideal for outdoor and indoor furniture. They are sturdy, durable and eco-friendly.

• Stay away from foamed furniture in its cushioning. Choose instead beds, sofas, loveseats and futons padded with cotton, kapok or latex that are designed comfortably without the polyester fillings.

• Reject those furnishings that are manufactured using toxic substances such as: paints and varnishes, epoxies and stains. Before buying any furniture, inquire about the material used in the manufacture of the item whether it is eco-friendly or not.

• The functionality of the item must be of utmost importance rather than the design. You may have eco-friendly furniture but if its use is questionable, it is just a waste. Be practical.

• When selecting furniture, opt for those that can be easily assembled and repaired, and when discarding time comes, you can still save some parts from it to be reused later.

You do not need to exhaust all your savings just to obtain a classy eco-friendly home decoration, just go for the quality kind of eco-friendly products.
